Some Look-And-Feel Changes

If everything goes okay over the next 15 minutes, there should be a moderate amount of change. This is going to set the groundwork for a lot of changes over the next week or two in terms of how the content is displayed (two words: “more simple”). A few new things include:

  • Dashboard (what would you like to see in your dashboard?)
  • Different menus for logged in people and not logged in people (and its simplified)
  • New front page (will be doing tests on this, so expect to see small changes over the next few weeks).
  • A Manifesto (still writing it, Sorry!)

If you notice anything broken in your particular browser, please shoot me an e-mail at koichi@textfugu.com. Looks good in Firefox / Chrome on my end, anyways, but you never know with that sneaky Internet Explorer.

Anyways, like I said, very early version of things, and laying the groundwork for some other changes I’ve wanted to make. Would love to hear your ideas, too, especially since things are in early stages!

Looks good man. Wasn't expecting a facial at all, but now that it's here I am glad to have it. The only thing I can think of right now in terms of the dashboard is maybe a bookmark option. It's not really essential but nice just to have to remember important items to study and where you left off.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

Bookmarks would be great :( Unfortunately I have pretty limited coding abilities, and everything's built on top of wordpress. Perhaps there's a plugin, though. Will have to look!

  • http://www.tictaek.com TicTaek

No worries man. It was only thing I could think of on the top of my head. But really, what you've put together here is perfect for my needs.

I can't thank you enough for all this. Maybe I should just randomly buy a lifetime membership for someone. Ah ha! That's a great idea.

  • Eisbehr

Do you really intend to leave it green like this? It's… well… it looks… ugly!? The old style was faaar better. And I don't see how this is simplified in any way.

BTW: Where did Twitter connect for comments go? The last time I commented I logged in via Twitter.

  • buddybear

Koichi, I love this new look. The fact that the front page directly tells guests about the revolutionary teaching method and simplicity that Textfugu offers is a fantastic idea. Not to mention the front page also makes the site look incredibly legit, and not just some “other” Japanese learning site. All in all, keep up the brilliant work my man!

P.S. : I also noticed you've been using your signature blowfish more often. I think that's great, and it gives Textfugu its own trademark. If I were to give you an idea, maybe you could give every season a unique little blowfish sprite in the drop-down menu, making textfugu's aesthetic trademark all that better :)

i don´t think it is ugly. it´s kind of spring like. :p
although the menue bar is a litle bit undecorational. there could be, on top of the menue, a deco banner or something. its not neccesery, but it doesn´t hurt eather.

I don't mind the new design, except for the dropdown menu. On Safari, it's grey texts on a grey background which make them difficult to read. Can you correct this please ?

  • Eisbehr

Maybe it was just the first shock *g*
A banner would be gread imo. Just to give it some space.
But then again… where would be the difference to the old design?

  • Maki

Now it's even better than before. And that's quite unexpected, since I thought TextFugu was already perfect… =)

  • sumi

The inspirational Redfugu is a brilliant idea. It knows my name but hopefullynot where I live . It wants to eat my brrrains, arrrgh!
I like the dashboard with Twitter updates ( I am not on Twitter).
The green color is not quite right though. It doesn't go well with the aqua and it looks to Christmasy next to the red.

  • Maki

I like that light green: it makes me think of spring =)
Anyway, I totally agree about the inspiring part: it's really, really useful… I think inspiration-giving is one of the best (and most important) things that make TextFugu different from other learning resources. As always, Koichi's done a great job =)

  • sumi

I have been close to giving up a few times but Koichi keeps me going .
It's really hard to stay motivated.
    The green color is fine.

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

hmm, try doing a hard refresh or resetting safari, might just be pulling the old design because it's saved in your history? I couldn't reproduce the issue, so I'm *hoping* it's just this and not something more mysterious!

  • bleh123

I like the new design, don't mind the color or anything, I'm just wondering how you're gonna make room for the new seasons.

  • http://regagnon.com/ Thierry

I don't have this bug anymore. As you said, it was maybe the cache fault. :)

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

haha, good question… I figured I'd cross that bridge when I came to it. Maybe get rid of those double arrow thingies >> … after that… well, that'll just have to be another bridge.

  • bleh123

Well, good luck with it! I hope it'll work out for you.

  • eisbehr

Can I change my password somewhere? I don't see any account settings or something similar.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juiles-Nevada/100000261694077 Juiles Nevada

you can change it. on top right of the page you should see your profil button. clik onit and then go down the page. there should be something like “new password” it doesn´t ask you for your old one. just type in twice your new password.

btw, wieso eisbehr und nicht eisbär? o.O

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juiles-Nevada/100000261694077 Juiles Nevada

    hm… okashi….. there is no profile button anymore ^^… i mean, i can´t find it….
    well, then… wait a while.

  • eisbehr

Eisbehr ist ein Nick, nichts weiter.
und einfach nur eisbär wäre ja lame ^^

  • textilerobot

I love what you've done with the place. Oh, and thanks for dividing the kanji chapters in two parts with Radicals in one chapter (season?) and actual kanji in another. Makes them a little bit easier to process. Haha!

  • jdduq

    I love the dashboard

  • Chrisjamess

Your site is awesome. I haven't had the money but I will be signing up soon. I've done the free lessons like 3298723 times haha.

This may be off topic but, do you have any plans for mobile compatibility? An iPhone app potentially? I think they would be really successful. Anyway, love what you're doing here man. Keep it up.

  • Andrew

it would cool to make textfugu an app but I already know that's too much to, right?

  • http://www.tofugu.com koichi

    maybe someday ;)
