Hello Everyone,

My name is Ryan. I lived in Japan for about a year and a half and used to vlog on youtube by the name RisuMiso. I have tried many methods of learning Japanese with some success, but my biggest problem is the lack of consistency. I tried the RTK/Sentence method, which works well, but found my grammar lacked. Then I took a course in Meguro once a week which helped quite a bit due to forced conversation. My wife is Japanese, so I have no lack of resources when it comes to conversation or questions, I just need to get back into studying. I found when I lived in Japan working 6 days a week teaching English, I had little time to study, though I made the most of my spare time.

I’m now back in Canada working full time as a power engineer, and taking a 4 year degree in computing and information systems in my spare time so when and if we move back to Japan, I hopefully won’t have to teach English. I’m also going to fit more time into my schedule for Japanese study as it was a key detractor to my happiness when I was in Japan.

Here’s to another new start!

-Ryan

Heya Ryan! I’ll be sure to check out your YouTube channel. From what I see so far, it looks like a fair amount of drunkenness :p

Good luck with your studies!

Hi Ryan, welcome to the forums! TextFugu should be a great resource for you. Just work on that consistency! :) I find it helps to set a reasonable goal of how much time you want/need to study every.single.day. Then do it. Just do it. No choices. It’s a part of your life now.

Good luck with your degree! I hope you are able to return to Japan and work in your field.

~Cassandra

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hashi- Only a small amount of my early videos and special events feature booze as the topic :p. Most are just about life in Japan, and of lazy quality…

Cassandra- in the past I burned myself out doing anki reps for hours a day, so I’m going to try to avoid that this time around… Though I still love anki! I’m going to try to do this moderately and hopefully I won’t start to dread Japanese study again. Japanese will always be a part of my life now whether or not I like it!

Welcome to TextFugu, Ryan!

I see you’ve decided to sway away from the most common action of work in Japan for foreigners.

Good luck learning Japanese.
