What better way to learn another language than total immersion? Right? Actually, I am hoping the great folks at TextFugu make it faster and more fun than what I can learn on my own and through traditional instruction. It’s good to finally make use of my membership and get my learnin’ on.

My interest in Japan is complicated and not traditional by any means. It all started when I had the pleasure of being an intern at a nihonshu brewery here in Osaka back in 2009. A few trips back to Japan for both pleasure and business (totally unrelated to nihonshu – aerospace, actually) has opened the opportunity to pursue my PhD in mechanical engineering at Osaka University (大阪大学). Thanks are due to the Japanese government and the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) scholarship. Now that I am here and in my intensive Japanese language course on campus, I wanted some suplemental material. Of all the resources at my disposal, I wanted to use TextFugu. I sincerely hope the community of fellow learners and the instructors/staff here at TextFugu make this experience all that more fun!

The road is long and I know the mountain of Japanese language learning is tall, but I look forward to it!

More accurately, I am living in Suita. It’s somewhat of a suburb of Osaka. So, it’s not exactly dense like the urban core, but it has its charms. After living in Southern California for nearly all of my life, I know that the subtropics of Osaka and the dreaded summers will be a challenge. But hey, you gotta take the good with the bad.

This isn’t my first time in Japan, so the “Alice in Wonderland” feelings aren’t quite as strong. However, I am sure I will find that the rabbit hole is quite deep and there are many things to learn and experience now that I will be in another country for quite some time.

I gotta say Tyler, that IS a pretty unconventional route to learning Japanese. I’m more than a little jealous of your work at the brewery.

Anyway, welcome to TextFugu and good luck learning Japanese. I’m sure between living in Japan and taking a course there, you’ll do just fine.

The Monbukagakusho scholarship probably deserves its own post somewhere else in the forums. Lemmie take a look and I’ll post it where appropriate and link to it from here.
