I was wondering how hard / different are they speaking in those. I’m nowhere near being able to listen to a japanese movie of the 00s, but how would they compare?

High and Low (1963)
Yojimbo (1961)
Seven samurai (1954)
Rashômon (1950)
Late Spring (1949)

Those are the ones I’m refering

My wife, a native Japanese speaker, didn’t seem to have any problem at all understanding the films. I’ve meant to watch “High and Low” for a while now. “The Eel”, “I Live in Fear”, and “Tampopo” are all good films. I found “Stray Dog” and “Ikiru” interesting, though a bit slow (yes, slower than the first half of Seven Samurai). In general, you shouldn’t have trouble watching anything from the post-war period. Note that I’m only 8 months into learning Japanese, and have spent the last 2-3 only on RTK, so I’m nowhere near fluent and was watching these films with English subtitles.

For people who prefers recent movie, I’d strongly recommand : Letters from Iwo Jima.

I’m planning to watch ”Confessions” (2010) soon, have any of you have seen it?

I don’t think I’ve seen Late Spring, but then I always forget which Ozu films I’ve actually seen, so I can’t say for sure. I find some of his work samey enough, and his style minimalistic enough that they blend together in my memories somewhat.

I also recommend checking out Ikiru, Ran, Woman in the Dunes and the movies by Kenji Mizoguchi.
