I feel like taking the JLPT level 5 this December, buuuut I have a few questions.

*Should* I take it? I just want to see what I know. Plus it serves as motivation and gives me a sense of accomplishment.
*Can* I take it? I’m 13 years old… Oh and the host institute is in Mexico City so I’ll just have to travel half a country >.>
Do you think I’ll be able to learn everything (grammar, vocab, kanji) by December?

So what do you guys have to tell me?

I can’t tell you if you’ll be able to pass or not. You should look into taking some practice tests online. I can’t remember al the requirements for jlpt lvl 5…

I took level 4 last winter. If you do take it I only have one piece of advice. Wear a watch. Cell phones are not allowed and the room I was in didnt have a clock so I couldn’t manage my time well. It almost screwed me over.

As for the motivation aspect, I think it can be great if your primary goal is to achieve high jlpt level for potential future employment or whatever. But jlpt has no focus on writing or speaking. Just reading and listening. So keep that in mind. If you focus all your time on onl 2 of 4 communication techniques then clearly the other two will be lacking.

Just my 2cents.

So the jlpt is like an understanding test, huh? I’ll keep that in mind so I can focus on creating (speaking and writing) and not just reading and listening.

Armando, my opinion here… but you’ll probably get alot more milage out of just taking practice tests online to gauge your own progress. Traveling to another country just to take level 5 seems like a waste of money for a test that isn’t going to do a whole lot for you at your age (other than confirm with yourself your own proficiency, which you can do for free at home).

I live in Mexico so it wouldn’t be much of a stretch. But I guess it would be pointless to go to just take level 5… I’m trying to go to fast, I’ll just stick to the samples and practice tests online.

A agree with the recently revived Missing; I don’t see any reason in taking the JLPT at all other than a resume booster and it seems like anything less than N3 isn’t really that impressive. If you are just using it as a motivational tool, a hard deadline and concrete objective, then just take a practice test on the day of the regular test. Just don’t cheat and peak early!
