I’ve not yet picked up a hard copy, but found a PDF of the first few lessons (trying to wait so I can pick up 6th edition). I was curious if when you guys mention RTK, if you are refering to just the first volume, or volume 1 and 2 together?

Also, currently I’m writing each of the kanji down in order with short hand on the stories to get it in my head (and some repetition just to get used to writing them), as well as going through the anki list. Of course, right now I’m just learning the meaning in english and it’s not doing jack for my japanese vocab… how are you guys going through the material? Any suggestions?

When people here refer to RTK, they are just referring to RTK1. I don’t think anyone has tackled RTK2.

I went through the entire book as prescribed by Heisig. See the keyword, write a story, write the kanji, SRS it as assigned. Sheepy can probably answer the question better than I as he’s moved beyond RTK and is using it in the real world. I’ve been through all of the kanji but am trying to catch up on my overdue Anki reviews. :P

Good luck!

I haven’t yet started RTK because I was waiting for sixth edition. But I found out you can buy it right now, straight from the Hawaii Press website here:

Yeah, the price is a lot better straight off the press. I read about them on wikipedia too. It says they are one of the largest university textbook presses. That’s probably why they are so cheap. $34.00 before shipping.

I’m brand new to using RTK and I don’t know if what I’m doing is good or not.

I’m reading the information on each kanji (story and meaning), then I write each kanji five times. Each time I write the kanji I recite the keyword or meaning. After I’m done with a kanji I go back and I try to recall the meaning of each kanji on my paper. At the end of the day I import the kanji I did that day into Anki from a RevTK .csv file.

Is this the proper way to go about learning the kanji, especially since I want to be able to write well too?

Can people suggest any other methods to use RTK?

I’m using RTK 1 6th edition, and I will be moving on to RTK 2 and RTK 3.

Also, am I going to have to wait for an RTK 2 6th edition to come out, or will the current edition of RTK 2 cover what I’m learning in RTK 1 6th edition?

Advice? Don’t do RTK 2.

I think we really should have a sticky regarding this SHEEPY because god knows how many times I’ve had to explain this.

To prevent killing myself I’m going to shorten this:
Don’t do RTK 2, because it sucks.

Use whatever version you have, don’t wait. If there are any new Kanji there are supplements (of 150 or so new jouyou kanji) to download.
