止める can be either やめる or とめる or とどめる

明日 can be either あす or　あした

昨日 can be either さくじつ or きのう

一昨日 can be either いっさくじつ or おととい

It looks like the level of formality is most of the difference, but with 止める the different readings have some distinct usages.
