これはがくせいですか : Is he a student?
In Season 2,8-2, it was stated that これ and それ referred to things in possession and あれ referred to something not in the possession of either person. Now I see the above example sentence and it refers to a person.. Okay I can handle that, if これ、それ and あれ can be used to refer to anything and anyone. But, if that is the case shouldn’t we use あれ as “he” is not in the possession of either person, “he” is “over there”?
Or is it that in Japanese “student” is considered as a thing/label and can therefore use これ to refer to the “student”?
November 10, 2013 at 8:16 am #42312Can’t comment on if これ has to refer to a thing over a person or not, as there may be exceptions I don’t know about, but I would read: これはがくせいですか as: Is this a student?
And これ doesn’t imply possession, it implies location.
これ = This close to me.
それ = That close to you.
あれ = That over there, away from both of us.However, if I remember correctly (from old studies, haven’t got that far again with TF)
You should be using:
こちら for a person.

November 10, 2013 at 11:14 am #42315I thought it was proximity, but possession is the way is how the Lesson explained it. I think I’ll ask over at WK see what they think about the sentence..
November 10, 2013 at 11:41 am #42316これ is acceptable for people, but こちら is more polite.
Concur that これ implies only proximity, not possession.
November 10, 2013 at 6:45 pm #42319So it was かれ!
Interforum posting FTW!
December 11, 2013 at 11:18 am #42745Just to simplify.
かれ (彼) means he/him
かのじょ (彼女) means she/her
これ = this
それ = that
あれ = that (over there)
こちら = this person
そちら = that person
あちら = that person (over there)December 13, 2013 at 3:55 pm #42778こちら and the like are more like directions rather than referring to specific people.
こちら :-
1: this way (direction close to the speaker or towards the speaker); this direction;
3: here (place close to the speaker or where the speaker is);
4: this one (something physically close to the speaker); () I; me; we; us;
5: this person (someone physically close to the speaker and of equal or higher status)They can also be shortened to こっち、そっち、あっち、どっち.
