My name’s Sam, I’m kinda learning “because I want to”, simply because japanese culture has fascinated me for a long time, but since that’s a bit of a cop out I’ve been trying to think of more measurable goals…

    1) I’d love to visit japan some day and speak the language well while i’m there
    2) Until then, I’d like to surprise japanese tourists (which we get quite a few of) by speaking to them in their own language
    3) I want to be able to tell if Japanese TV shows really are as crazy as they look, or if they actually make sense once you know the language.
    I suspect the former.

I live in the south west of the UK, I like to Juggle, Geocache, and until recently I was addicted to Minecraft. I seem to have weaned myself off that now.

    Nice to meet y’all!

    Hi Sam!

Welcome to Textfugu! はじめましてYour motivations seem valid enough, you don’t have to justify yourself, you know! :P

I’m also from the UK, up in the other corner – Liverpool. Where are you? And how come you get so many Japanese tourists? In Liverpool even the Japanese restaurants are run by Chinese or Taiwanese staff as they think Scousers won’t notice…. I tried to speak Japanese in my local noodle bar the other day, to be told in a very Northern English accent ‘that none of us here speak Japanese, love!’ Ho hum, will have to try somewhere else then!

Anyway, Have you tried watching ‘Ninja Warrior’, it’s awesome. I even picked up a bit of conversation the other day as the contestants speak quite politely. And Brian Blessed is a god. It is indeed a very crazy show!

    Good luck with your studies!

Douzo yoroshiku, Hashi and Emma – I’d type it in kana but no ime at work :(

I’m in rural wiltshire/gloucestershire – the cotswolds seems to be a big tourist destination. I don’t like stereotyping, but I have to admit the one of japanese tourists with their cameras (and their I <3 London baseball caps) seems to be pretty accurate!

Good old merseyside, I spent some time there a while back – I reckon my scouse accent is a lot better than my japanese one.

I don’t actually watch much TV, but assuming it’s available on the net somewhere I’ll check it out.

Many thanks, best of luck with yours too!

    Welcome to TextFugu, Sam.

    I like your third reason.

I’m also from the UK but I’m up in North Yorkshire. (NO WE’RE NOT ALL FARMERS DAMNIT!)

Oooh, Minecraft. I play RuneScape and people who play RuneScape usually play Minecraft as well. I’ve heard Minecraft is an evil bloodsucking game which pulls you in and gives you the addiction virus.

    Good luck.

People from North Yorkshire aren’t all farmers its true. Some are aspiring farmers, or farmhands. Sometimes the farmer’s wife.

Thanks guys :) Same goes round here. Hot Fuzz is a pretty accurate picture of the area I live in (well the first half, before it turns into an action movie, anyway)

    on guns :
“Everyone and their mums is packin’ round here.”
    “Like who?”
    “Farmers?”
    “Who else?”
    “Farmer’s mums?”

    Hey SammoBoo!

Nice set of goals you’ve got there apart from just wanting to learn ;)

By the way I like your Hot Fuzz quote, I was actually reading it with the accent going on in my head :D

Nice to meet you! And good luck.

Welcome to Textfugu, Sam! Enjoy your stay at the Fugu hotel.

Those are some of my reasons too! Hope you have fun learning Japanese, if you ever need help along the way ask anybody… Oh and I recommend the gakuu 80% off deal, ya’ know just saying>.>

Btw Kaona what’s your Runescape username? Mines Ygmi Light.

It really is a warm welcome you get around here. I like that!

Quick FYI, changed my display name from sammoboo to insanimal – which is the name i use almost everywhere else.

Thanks for the heads up Armando – I was about to say that I’d leave gakuu until I was less of a beginner – thinking 80% was still going to be a lot of cash. then I thought hmmm better check the dashboard again and see how that actually works out.
WOW. I really had that one the wrong way round.

Oh and kaona, yes minecraft is a terrible disease. I spent 6 months heavily into it, and I am too terrified to go back to it cos I’d never learn any japanese then. The only game I ever played that compared in addiction terms was Civilization
