Just finished watching Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress” and “Yojimbo.”
Awesome movies. Does anyone else have any recommendations for great Japanese movies?
October 1, 2012 at 7:06 pm #35858Speaking of Akira Kurosawa, Throne of Blood or Seven Samurai!
October 2, 2012 at 6:49 am #35866I have seen Seven Samurai before, but I’ll check out Throne of Blood!
October 2, 2012 at 12:51 pm #35874Anything by Studio Ghibli. I’m falling in love with Mamoru Hosoda as well. =)
October 2, 2012 at 4:27 pm #35880Seconding the Studio Ghibli suggestion. They go way beyond simple kids’ anime films and make things anybody can enjoy.
October 2, 2012 at 6:40 pm #35883Studio Ghibli is awesome! From Studio Ghibli I have seen “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,” “Princess Mononoke,” “Spirited Away,” and “Ponyo.”
Gotta say that Ponyo was not that impressive :/ There was not enough climatic development to me. A lot of it seemed to be rambling through with no clear objectives, and the childlike innocence of the ending didn’t cut it for me.
I loved Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke. Those are some classics!
@Joel: Anything in particular I need to look for from Mamoru Hosoda?
October 2, 2012 at 7:30 pm #35885The Girl who Leapt Through Time (時をかける少女), Summer Wars (サマーウォーズ), and his latest movie, Wolf Children (おおかみこども雨と雪).
If you’re a Digimon fan, he also worked on the first two Digimon movies (though Summer Wars is strongly reminiscent of the second one).
October 3, 2012 at 5:33 am #35894There’s a new one? Yay!
October 3, 2012 at 1:12 pm #35917It just aired here in Australia (though in like eight cinemas across the country, but that’s pretty much what anime movies usually get here). Along with Ghibi and Shinkai’s latest movies, and the latest Berserk movie.
October 3, 2012 at 1:49 pm #35922愛のむきだし (Love Exposure) hehe. Unless we’re only talking animation.
October 3, 2012 at 2:41 pm #35923As One is good.
October 3, 2012 at 3:36 pm #35926I definitely recommend The Castle of Cagliostro which is a Miyazaki film (not Studio Ghibli though) and Grave of the Fireflies which isn’t by Studio Ghibli but they were in charge of the animation production work. Grave of the Fireflies is a very saddening movie though and is based on a semi-autobiographical novel about World War 2 from one Japanese perspective. A Studio Ghibli film you must watch though is My Neighbor Totoro. 5 Centimeters Per Second is a lovely movie I really enjoyed too but it’s more like an hour long movie divided into 3 episodes.
Other movies I’ve watched and enjoyed are Memoirs of a Geisha, Battle Royale and Crows Zero. There was one more which I’ve completely forgotten the name of, if I remember it and/or any other good films I’ll post here again.
October 3, 2012 at 4:10 pm #35928愛のむきだし was a truly odd movie, but interesting. I’d watch it again I suppose. But damn, it was long too. (I think close to 4 hours?)
