August 15, 2013 at 8:58 am #41534Hi, I’m searching for Anki decks that include general purpose words and expressions that do not represent a physical object or action like “why”, “for example”, “while” – things like that. I just can’t find anything and I really can’t be bothered to create these decks myself. Would be great if anybody could help me out! August 15, 2013 at 1:09 pm #41538Fun fact: Japanese has no prepositions. =) The words that we call prepositions in English are replaced by particles in Japanese, and particles are all postpositions. As for the actual question, I have no idea. Sorry. August 15, 2013 at 5:22 pm #41544Haha! I guess you’re right – I never thought about that. Anyway, I just meant words in “the style of” prepositions. Thanks though. August 16, 2013 at 7:37 am #41551I’ve been collecting a list that might help. I just use it for reference, but if you paste the following into a spreadsheet it’ll be easy to make a deck out of. それも and in addition to that
それで and; thereupon; because of that
 それに besides; moreover
それと and then; even so; and
それより apart from that; other than that; leaving that aside; more … than that; but; however

 それどころか on the contrary
 それはそうと by the way; incidentally
それにしても nevertheless; at any rate; even so
それはさておき apart from that; to return to the topic; enough of that
そのかわり instead; but (on the other hand)
そうする to do so; to do thus
 そうして and; like that
そうすれば if so; in that case; in that situation
そうなると if that is the case; if it becomes so; when it becomes so
そういうことか I got it; I see; I now know; So that’s the reason
そういえば which reminds me …; come to think of it …; now that you mention it …; on that subject …; so, if you say …
 どうかな I wonder; I don’t know; how about …?;
どうして why?; for what reason; how; in what way; for what purpose; what for
どうでもいい inconsequential; indifferent; not worth worrying about; whatever you do is OK; trivial
どうであろうと whatever (the case may be)
どうしたらいい what’s the best thing to do?
どうやら it seems like; it appears that; somehow or other
 これで here; with this
これより from (this, here, etc.); since (this)
どうやって how; in what way; by what means
かといって having said that; on the other hand
ところが even so; however; still; whereupon; even though; nevertheless; on the contrary; as a matter of fact; despite
しかも moreover; furthermore; nevertheless; and yet
 ほかに in addition; besides
なにしろ at any rate; anyhow; anyway; in any case
しかたがない it can’t be helped; it’s inevitable; it’s no use; can’t stand it; being impatient; being annoyed
しょうがないなぁ if you insist (on it)
けっきょくのところ in the end; at the end of the day
けっきょく after all; eventually; in the endAugust 17, 2013 at 2:29 am #41557wow!
I am only a beginner, but this will sure help me in the future. Thanks you! :DAugust 17, 2013 at 5:56 am #41560Nice work, Astralfox. I’m forever having trouble with stuff like that. However, some of them are a little hard to grasp just from the English translation – you should maybe try finding example sentences to go along with them, to give a better feel for how they work. I had no idea how それとも would be used till I looked it up on jisho.org’s sentences section just now. Did you just find these while reading through a dictionary or was it while you were reading/watching “proper” material, because if you could get the original sentences for context that would probably work quite well. August 17, 2013 at 11:34 am #41564^ Yeah they need to be seen in context. About half of those were collected while reading, the other half from a dictionary when I was bored (cutting out the ones that didn’t seem to be in use). They were just down for reference, so it’s Good ol’ Space ALC for context. August 20, 2013 at 7:49 am #41613Wow, great, thanks a lot, Astralfox :)
