So I bought a bunch of DVD’s straight from Japan the other day (ebay is great!), but I’m silly and forgot that, well, I have an American DVD player. I’d rather not go back on ebay, this time to shop for a Japanese DVD player, because, well, that would be expensive. Is there some way to negate region lock or something on my American DVD player? Suggestions anyone? :(
:)
February 24, 2014 at 7:44 pm #44201Hi there,
Most DVD players have the ability to change their region setting.
Its a hidden menu, so you won’t find it in the player’s manual.
This site here: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks
Has a huge list of dvd players and instructions on how to change their regions. If yours isn’t on there, then look for a similar model, as the method may be the same.
Hope this helps!

February 25, 2014 at 8:28 am #44210You can also generally watch them on your computer. Worst case, if you have a laptop, you could vga out to your tv.
March 9, 2014 at 5:38 pm #44339Actually, you may want to re-think “not going back to eBay”. DVD players are REALLY cheap, maybe your local asian store has a blackboard where you can post something, which would be an option if you want to avoid shipping.
Thing is: The Playstation2 is rather affordable, and it does A LOT. You not only plays PS2 games but also basically all PS1 games, and regular DVDs, there actually used to be a proper Remote for the DVD functionality. In my opinion it may be worth looking into that, if you would enjoy playing games that is.
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.March 11, 2014 at 1:16 pm #44375Thanks for the help guys, I finally got it working! :)
March 12, 2014 at 7:43 am #44392Just make sure you don’t buy the PS2 from Australia. I’m not sure about that one specifically, but we often get jipped on functionality with them.
March 12, 2014 at 1:53 pm #44406Oh – an ausi! Australians famously get screwed just about as hard as Germans when it comes to games. At least you don’t have it that far to Japan. Anything specific that’s wrong with Australian PS2s?
