Hi there,
I’m suddenly meeting one of my penpals who is in the UK for a few months on an overseas language study trip, and speaks very little English. My reading and writing skills are my strong point, but I have practically no conversational experience.
I’d like to hear everyone’s suggestions for emergency phrases that can be used to ease tension due to the language barrier. Or versatile words/grammar that can be easily used to construct such sentences. Things that will help keep conversation flowing rather than disrupt it. I don’t want to have to repeat a few set phrases over and over. My initial thoughts are;
・・・ってどういう意味?
・・・という意味?
・・・ということ?
続けてください
あまり分からないけど・・・
つまり、
というか、
どんな感じ
・・・についてNovember 23, 2013 at 2:40 pm #42530語順がおかしい?
Is my word order strange?
November 23, 2013 at 2:52 pm #42531I’m positive that will come in handy (^_^;)

These are just some things I just came up with in a minute. But most of these are casual…November 24, 2013 at 6:52 pm #42537Every word you’ll ever need to learn to be functional in spoken Japanese:
どうも
どうぞ
すみません=P
November 25, 2013 at 12:59 am #42546And if all else fails:
何時ですか
なに!?!
じゃまたねMake a speedy exit! @_@
Sorry I’d help more but my Japanese sucks. :P
November 25, 2013 at 4:56 am #42551Hahah, thanks guys. I’m sure we’ll have fun even if we don’t have any idea what the other is talking about.
November 25, 2013 at 6:00 am #42552Enjoy the meeting!
じゃまたね!November 25, 2013 at 1:10 pm #42555Since she’s on a language study trip, if you can’t think of anything to say, just say “Ok, now let’s practise English! :D” – that should buy you some time ;)
As for serious suggestions, it might be better going to a bigger Japanese learning forum with more people that are more experienced; TextFugu’s ok and all, but there really aren’t that many people here that are anywhere near fluent. Like in my case, I’m just like you: “My reading
and writingskills are my strong point, but I have practically no conversational experience.”; hell, even in English my small talk skills are no good :PThese might be good places to ask (can’t say for sure as I’ve not used them):
