Hi, nice to meet you! I’m Theresa. I’m in my mid-20s and am from the US.
This will probably sound really lame and I hope I don’t come off as a douche, but I’m hoping to make it over to the Tohoku region in the near future to help out with disaster relief/rebuild efforts? So that’s why I’m learning Japanese. I can’t imagine the intensity of suffering that those people are enduring right now, and they’ve been so strong. But things are far from over, and my heart just really goes out to them … :\
But yeah, I found this site through YouTube while sifting through videos on Japanese culture and news. I’m pretty much a complete beginner when it comes to learning Japanese – it’s very … different! What supplementary stuff I’d found before Tofugu/Textfugu had been pretty hard to navigate, but this site has been awesome and I’m really excited for things to start coming together. Thanks Tofugu … :)
June 29, 2011 at 11:20 am #13393Hey Theresa! Wanting to help out earthquake victims isn’t lame at all – I think it’s a pretty admirable cause.
Good luck learning Japanese, and let us know if there’s anything we can do to help!

Your reason is NOT lame. I think it’s a lovely and kind reason.
I wish you the best.Good luck learning Japanese.
June 30, 2011 at 9:27 am #13464hashi and Winter,
Thanks for the welcome! Mann, I hope it didn’t seem like I was fishing for nice comments ^_^! I think, just after trying to keep up with things over there I started feeling sort of small and useless … But yeah, totally over that, ha ha ..
Anyway, what about you two? Why are you learning Japanese? :)
June 30, 2011 at 10:58 am #13498I’m learning Japanese because I’m Japanese-American and want to reconnect with my heritage.
June 30, 2011 at 12:35 pm #13505I have three reasons:
1) So I can go to Japan and watch the cherry blossoms.
2) Able to meet Nico Nico dancers, communicate with them and maybe even dance with them if I’m lucky enough. Also, I want to be able to read everything on the website.
3) I want to live in Japan. My original reasons were to watch anime without subtitles and read raw manga.
