Hello! I’ve been a member for a couple of months now, but holding onto Koichi’s advice given sometime in Season 1 I was holding off on telling people about how I’m studying japanese. But, now that I’ve purchased a membership both on textfugu and wanikani and have been actively studying it for a couple of months, I think it’s safe to say it will become a long term hobby.
Anyways, I’m a university student that’s studying linguistics, russian, and computer science! I’ve taken a couple french classes as well and do a little bit of studying french in my free time too.
I probably would’ve pursued japanese in a classroom setting (instead of russian) but the usage of rote memorization and pace made me decide against it. A couple of my friends have only learned 80-100 kanji in an entire school year at college level. Needless to say, self-studying is a much smarter decision and I would love to somehow study/teach abroad in Japan for a year or two after my undergrad/before my Master’s.
This is getting a bit long and I know the textfugu forums can be on the quiet side. But I’m still a noob on wanikani and don’t feel ready to introduce myself on there yet. Hopefully this community will become more active once EtoEto is released. Happy studies!June 14, 2015 at 1:12 pm #48024Hi, Doctor Nick!
I did Japanese at my university, and while I thought we also started learning kanji rather late, don’t forget that there’s also grammar and vocab to learn as well. Gotta walk before you can run. =)
June 14, 2015 at 2:30 pm #48026Oh my god, I got that reference.
Thats true, theres a lot more to Japanese than just kanji. For me I think learning kanji is the most appealing/fun part. Which makes wanikani a perfect program for me.
What level would you say your japanese is Joel?June 14, 2015 at 8:56 pm #48029Have to say, Beyond the Boundary is an awesome show. Just watched the first movie yesterday.
June 14, 2015 at 9:05 pm #48031I passed the JLPT N3 in December 2013, which puts me at upper intermediate.
I’ve… been a little lax in my studies since then, though.

Joel – Damn, congrats on that, many people dont make it that far. I hope yoy havent forgotten too much! Just after a month of neglecting russian ive noticed how hard it is to recall words!June 22, 2015 at 11:01 pm #48060Alice, thanks for encouraging all of us! I have found both this website and the kanji website (wanikani) very interesting.
