Hi there!
I’m a second year Japanese major student at an NZ university…but sometimes I feel like my Japanese is still at 5 year old level :’-( I actually studied it all through high school too, but then took a two year gap between high school and uni and forgot most of it! I’ve got hiragana and katana down but right now kanji is the bain of my Japanese existence…it’s so embarrassing having to write in hiragana all the time even for some basic kanji…ANYway, I still love Japanese and am determined to do it until the end! I really like the Tofugu style and philosophy, and even though I have a lot of basic knowledge I thought it’d be good to go from the beginning again…so here I am ^^
July 25, 2012 at 4:46 pm #33590Welcome to Textfugu! Writing Kanji is difficult for sure. I don’t think I will be learning to write that until I feel comfortable with the rest of the language…so several years from now haha.

Good luck with your studies!

July 26, 2012 at 1:46 pm #33645Thank you all!
FYI I’m studying/living in Wellington…and it’s beautiful today!
Cassandra~ I’m not entirely sure what I’ll do with my degree, Ive always been interested in translation (especially spoken) but of course you have to be super good for that! To be honest the classes are a bit tedious at times and I don’t feel like a really get a chance to explore the language practically (we’re often taught like 10 grammar structures a lesson!) but again, because of my love for the language and culture, I get through :) Also I have so many friends in Japan/who speak Japanese, I know I’m bound to end up there someday! My other major is German so I’m a bit of a language geek really >.<

That’s awesome that you already have friends in Japan. That should help a ton with your language skills!
Two languages at the same time? I am in awe. :) I tried learning Spanish and Japanese at the same time and failed miserably. Maybe it would work better now that I’ve had some practice, but it still sounds intimidating.
