Hello, I came back from Sendai, Japan about a week ago helping Japanese homeowners rebuild their homes after the Tsunami last year. I had a wonderful experience with Samaritan’s Purse stationed in Tome, Japan. The ONLY drawback was that I could not communicate with the Japanese owners and always needed a translator. I am determined to master Japanese and then going back to Sendai to help and build relationships with the people who live there. I am Chinese and am fluent with writing and reading Kanji; however, I do not know how to pronounciate them in Japanese.
April 20, 2012 at 2:38 am #29726Hey Joanne. Welcome to TF :). I think it’s wonderful you’ve been to Japan and helped people out after the terrible disaster last year. That must be a huge motivation for you to learn the language. I wish you all the best with learning Japanese. If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask questions here on the forum :)
April 20, 2012 at 3:32 pm #29730Hi Joanne, welcome to TextFugu! That’s great that you were able to help out in the Sendai area, it’s an incredibly decent thing for you to do. Do you have any plans to return to Japan in the future?
Good luck with your studies!
April 21, 2012 at 2:27 pm #29755Definitely going back to Sendai, there are still much to do there even after a year. I am hoping to be able to be a translator :) When I was there, all of the translator were foreigners, amazing!
April 22, 2012 at 9:49 am #29763Language is such a powerful method of communication. After I have learnt Japanese, I plan to move on to Chinese. Do you speak Mandarin Joanne?
April 22, 2012 at 1:38 pm #29768I am fluent in Cantonese. I probably should learn Mandarin someday :)

I’d love to learn both Mandarin and Cantonese. Cantonese sounds harder as there’s more tones. Where abouts are you from?April 28, 2012 at 12:01 pm #30004Definitely easier to learn Mandarin, as far as pronouniciations. I have yet met anyone who can speak Cantonese like a local yet :)
I was born in Hong Kong and now residing in Los Angeles.

April 29, 2012 at 2:33 am #30018LA must be nice. If I went there, I’d especially like to visit Little Tokyo, Koreatown and Chinatown. Seems Mandarin might be a good idea to learn first and then Cantonese?
