hey guys, is there any way to negate a な adjective when its before the noun like how we do with い adjectives? My question holds the same for any conjugation of a な adjective previous to the noun like for example, to do with べんりなくるま the same we can do with はやい as follows:
はやくないくるま
はやくなかったくるま
and finally はやかったくるまLets say in a sentence like this one: はやくないくるま を かいました now negating the べんり part in this other one: べんりなくるまをかいました (Using ふべんな is obviously cheating in this question…..)
November 2, 2014 at 2:09 pm #46740It’s just べんりじゃないくるま
Don’t think Kouichi covers pre-nominal adjectives in as much detail as he really should…
November 2, 2014 at 2:19 pm #46741Yes I think you can. They should conjugate the same as nouns – see http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar/adjectives for more information.
Your example should turn into: べんりじゃない車
Edit: I need to refresh tabs more often >_>
November 2, 2014 at 3:51 pm #46747Awesome, thnks a lot for the answers, never heard of じゃない bfore but now i do.
November 2, 2014 at 4:01 pm #46748Ok….. and i thought the difference between ません and ない was going to be easy…. theres a PAPER on that subject… but well, now i understand it, here u have it if u want it:

November 2, 2014 at 4:05 pm #46749That’s on the difference between ません and ないです, which are both polite negative endings. ない on its own is the dictionary-form negative ending, which you have to use for pre-nominal adjectives (or for pre-nominal anything, actually).
November 2, 2014 at 6:19 pm #46750Ok….. seems I still have a lot to learn about this topic but anyways, as soon as i finish textfugu (I’m guessing like 2-4 more weeks) I’ll take a GOOD look at the dictionary of basic Japanese grammar (that one from the Japan Times) to polish everything b4 jumping to Genki. I guess by the end of all that, while I play in Wanikani, I’ll finish understanding all of these things. Thnkx for all the answers once again.
November 2, 2014 at 7:03 pm #46751I’ve read the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar literally from cover to cover. =)
You’ll probably find that Genki and TextFugu cover much of the same material…
