When I’m using TextFugu itself (doing the lessons) I do fine. But I randomly booted up Realkana and decided to practice my hiragana and I screwed up a few times. I seem to always have trouble remembering that a dakuten turns kana that start with an “h” sound into “b”, and I sometimes get へ and く mixed up. To my credit though, TextFugu doesn’t use へ very often yet (I’m about half way through season 2), so that could be part of the reason. Also, I still don’t know them enough to where I can read the kana individually immediately. I can do it faster if it’s a full word. I’m guessing this is normal, but I wanna make sure I’m making good enough progress with it. Basically, I still can’t read it *too* fast and some kana throw me off because they’re not used very often.
March 26, 2013 at 10:30 pm #39261I wouldn’t worry about anything really.
You’ll get better at reading with experience.
If there are some you are having problems focus on them for a bit. Perhaps come up with some rule or reminder to tell the difference between them.

March 27, 2013 at 5:31 am #39263The more examples you see and work with, the easier it gets. I remember a time when it was very similar for me, but rest assured that it does get better with practice and effort.
March 27, 2013 at 9:57 am #39264Here’s the mnemonics I used for those two;
へ : it’s a speed bump, driving over it too fast will make you let out an involuntary noise like ‘he!’
く : something to do with pac-man
You could also link the similarity of the lowercase letters ’h’ and ‘b’, adding a dakuten means adding a line at the bottom to turn h into b. Little tricks like these makes remembering things really easy. Whenever you have trouble with anything, try to make something up like that.
March 27, 2013 at 1:20 pm #39267Thanks guys. Mnemonics really do help more than you’d expect them to.
March 27, 2013 at 5:19 pm #39271… More than you’d expect them to? Is that not the entire point of mnemonics? =P
March 27, 2013 at 5:44 pm #39272Howabout ‘he’ is kinda horizontal – ‘h’ for horizontal (sorry no IME here).

April 4, 2013 at 9:40 pm #39402へ – Think of a mountain, and at the top someone is screaming HEy I need HElp! Kinda cheesy, but that’s how I remember.
