Well, I can tell you what’s happened, but not why it happened, or how to fix it. Basically your keyboard’s been switched from romaji entry to direct hiragana entry – each key on the keyboard represents a kana character. If you had a Japanese keyboard, these kana would be painted on the keys (along with the English letters).

I was thinking you may have pressed some combination of hotkeys that changed the input method, but Googling hasn’t turned up any results for me. Maybe someone else will know…

Aye, that was brought up on the previous page. 走 is the correct radical – 疋 is possibly a simplified version, which he references in his explanation of but never actually explains explicitly.

Not sure it actually is a simplified version in real-world etymology, though.

Honestly, I think every Japanese student reaches a point where they seem to be forgetting things as fast as they learn them. Just keep at it, but don’t overdo it or you’ll burn out. Don’t skip the kanji, but maybe it’s worth coming up with a new way to learn them. Study the vocab which uses the kanji rather than the kanji in isolation. Use said vocab with the grammar, so you can learn all the things at once. =)

Padraic (pronounced like porridge, but with an “ick” at the end instead of an “idge”).

Sooo… like “Yorick” only with a P at the front? =P

    I did Nakama. =)

Sadly, I’ve forgotten exactly where Nakama 1 stops, and I haven’t got them on me to check. Maybe just skim through TextFugu until you hit something you don’t understand, and read that in more detail?

P.S. “Most of the irregular verbs”? There’s only two of them. =P

七 is a bit of a weird one in that its readings tend to be fairly interchangeable. 四 as well, to a lesser extent.

To be fair, I’m not sure what word *would* be more appropriate

完全? 全部? 一式? Or just plain old トータル? =)

Aye, both of those sentences had crossed my mind as well. Not sure why I didn’t write them down. =P

Flipping through the grammar dictionary has suggested によって. You’ll also need a passive verb (since the main clause is “the game was made by the company”). Sooo…

    トランシスターはスーパージャイアントゲームズによって作られたゲームです。

Basically “Transistor is a was-made-by-Supergiant-Games game.” If you want me to expand on anything, just ask. =)

Welcome! I’ve completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering myself, but have never really worked as an actual engineer. Hah.

Have you ever been to Japan at all?

P.S. Written Japanese is kanji + hiragana + katakana. =)

in reply to: What is あります? + verb Q's #45145

I think あります means ‘to be’ or ‘to exist.’ It is used mainly when referring to inanimate objects. ありません is just the negative form: ‘to not exist’

For the record, the state-of-being verb for animate objects is いる.

There are many different categories of verbs and many different verb endings and a set of rules for combining different verb categories with different endings. These rules, like every set of language rules, have exceptions.

Actually, there’s only two categories (plus the two irregulars), and only one exception (i.e. 行く). Course, it can occasionally be tricky to spot which group some verbs are in, which makes them look like exceptions, but they’re not.

Anyway, you’ll learn how to form the dictionary-form verbs in chapter 5 of TextFugu, so for now just power through as best you can, and you’ll be taught it in a bit. =)

On the other hand, Americans probably know more about American history than (say) Australians know about Australian history.

I’m reasonably sure that Scotland came into existance a little before WWI. =)

P.S. Thought you were going to ask us to teach you how to be a diplomat in Japanese. =P
