Thanks for the supportive messages. I was really hoping to get a sense that I was on the right track with my passion choice, and not going off the deep end. It sounds like, by most of your feedback, that I’m OK. Maybe I’m taking the assignment too seriously, but it’s hard to not take your passion seriously. :)

I’m not worried about a website disagreeing with me. I’m concerned I wasn’t doing this correctly. If anyone read a negative tone in my original message, that was not intended, sorry for the confusion.

Now I face a similar problem as ooh_a_robot. Most of my passion list nouns seem to be borrowed words. I’m not getting anything by “memorizing” them. I tried to find native equivalents, but as far as a I can tell, they don’t exist or are rarely used. Also, turns out gaming has a lot of verbs. My next step is to look through some of my Japanese games I’ve imported, and see if I can spot and pull some common words from there.

I wonder if it would be useful for people to post their lists on the forums for reference, validation of translation, and to serve as ideas for others?

I didn’t have any money when the SNES was big, so I missed out on most of the games that came out for it.

Generally speaking I’m looking for creative game experiences these days. Many games we see are carbon copies of previous works, so we end up with little innovation. Japan has its share of that problem, but they also have a lot more new and interesting game experiences. At the very least they have stuff that has never made it to the US.

Lately I’ve been playing most of my RPGs on the DS. Have you tried Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor? It’s one of the most interesting RPGs I’ve played in a long time.

While I was in Japan I picked up both of the Spice & Wolf RPG DS games. I probably won’t be able to play them for some time, but that’s definitely something I don’t expect them to release in the US.

    Thanks Z-man.

Speaking of games did you pick your handle based on the board game company? Or is that just a coincidence?

Yeah, I’m a software developer, and I sometimes have to take notes during meetings. The notes are just for me, and I like the idea of writing them in a language most people around the office cannot read. I promise I’m not building a super villain death ray or anything. Besides I’m under the impression that Japanese, as a language, is more well suited for building giant robots. Hmm, that gives me an idea…

Ha, ha, I’ve never been out your way, but it sounds better than my homeland Michigan where we have 8 months of snow. ;)

    Actually it’s closer to 6.

Now you know why I moved to the south. ;)

    Welcome and good luck!

Working on your third language? Impressive. I’m jealous. I’m a life long native English speaker, and I feel like I’ve yet to master my native language. ;)

    Good luck and welcome!

    Hey welcome!

On a related note if you’re ever in Atlanta there is a local theater that sometimes, once or twice a year maybe, shows Gojia movies. However, before the movie they do a live action costumed kaiju battle on stage with a fake cardboard city they smash. It’s cheesy, but tons of fun to watch.
