Exit

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
しゅつ で.る, だす +

Meaning: Exit

There are two mountains in front of you… and probably a bunch more around you too. You are in a mountain pass, and dont’ know how to get out. You are frantically looking for the exit before you freeze to death. The most important thing is to find the exit from this mountain range – your life depends on it.

In your imagination, really feel like your life depends on getting out. The important part is the feeling of “needing to get out of the mountain pass.” If you have this feeling, you’ll be more likely to remember that this kanji means exit, because that’s what you want to do when you see this kanji.

Reading: しゅつ

As you’re trying to exit this mountain range, you suddenly realize that someone is actually hunting you. What? Make sure to feel that sudden realization. It’s crazy. Then, you find the exit and run towards it. Sadly, the hunter is waiting there, and he shoots (しゅつ) you through the leg, knocking you down.

Focus on the surprise of realizing you’re being hunted while trying to find the exit to the mountain range, then focus on the next part, where you get shot. View it in your head as “he shoots me” so you have “shoots” instead of “shot.” Powww!

Vocabulary

Learn the meanings of these words before moving on and learn the readings too, if your brain isn’t overly full.

a 出す(だす)= To Take Something Out / hand something over

  • Meaning: This is when you’re “exiting” something via your own actions. You’re the one taking something out or handing something over.
  • Reading: The reading is one of the kun’yomi readings. I’d recommend doing your best to remember it now, then use the study deck to practice recalling it later on.

a 出る(でる)= To Leave, (Something) Comes Out

  • Meaning: This is when something is leaving or something is going out. You’re not the one removing or exiting something, something (possibly you, too) is just exiting. Basically, this is the verb form of the kanji.
  • Reading: Like 出す, I’d recommend trying to remember it now, then practicing it in your study deck.

a 出口(でぐち)= exit

  • Combo: 出 (exit) + 口 (mouth)
  • Meaning: This is the noun for “exit.” This is what you see on exit signs.
  • Reading: The reading is just kun’yomi readings put together. 口 likes to be kun’yomi reading, so you can often guess that combo words with 口 in it use the kun’yomi reading rather than the on’yomi one (which is usually the case with combo kanji like this).
