Paragraph

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
n/i +

Meaning: Paragraph

The mouth that is speaking is enclosed, though. It’s enclosed on a piece of paper, each enclosure a paragraph around the mouth.

If you imagine an actual mouth attached to each paragraph, saying what’s below it, this will probably help. It’s weird, and pretty easy to go from enclosed mouth to thinking the mouth is enclosed by a piece of paper / a PARAGRAPH that also happens to have a talking mouth on it. Imagine this in your mind for a while.

Reading: く

As you’re reading all the paragraphs, you run into one that’s particularly weird. It’s mouth that keeps saying over and over again “that’s coo’ (く), that’s coo’, that’s coo’.”

Imagine the text underneath the mouth too. It also is “that’s coo‘ that’s coo‘ that’s coo‘” over and over again. If you say out loud “that’s coo” in a really weird voice, I guarantee it’ll help you to remember this, as well (make sure you have the vision of the mouth on the paper, too).

Vocabulary

Both of the words for this kanji are ripe for your picking. Both contain only kanji you know. So, you should learn it all before moving on.

a 句(く)= Section of Text, Paragraph

  • Meaning: The meaning of the word is the same as the kanji.
  • Reading: On’yomi reading – lucky you! Something you already know.

a 文句(もんく)= Complaint

  • Combo: 文 (writing) + 句 (paragraph)
  • Meaning: When you complain, you write a paragraph about it. At least, that’s how I’d complain if I wanted to complain to the emperor.
  • Reading: The on’yomi readings of the kanji. Know those and you’ll know the reading for this word, too.
