たく n/a + 丿 +

Meaning: Home

There are seven people, and they are under a slide with a helmet on top of it. They’re huddled up, trying to get out of the rain. Despite how sad it looks, this is their residence. This is where they live.

The reason you see these people is because you’re returning an envelope with their name on it. You accidentally got their mail. You walk up and ask “is this the smith residence?” Yep, it is.

Reading: たく

They invite you into their sad slide house, but before you go in, they demand you take your shoes off. You comply, and promptly step on a tack (たく).

Feel the pain of the tack on your foot. You look around and see there’s tacks everywhere, presumably to keep cats away from their open residence. Ouch ouch ouch. What’s up with all these tacks?

Vocabulary

Learn the meanings of these words and the readings too. It’s all on’yomi, so it shouldn’t be too hard as long as you’ve been keeping up on things.

a 宅(たく)= Residence

  • Meaning: The meaning is basically the same as the kanji. 宅 is kind of a fancy way to say home in vocab form, though, so we’re going to call this “residence.”
  • Reading: On’yomi reading.

a 自宅(じたく)= One’s Own Home (Formal)

  • Combo: 自 (self) + 宅 (residence)
  • Meaning: Kind of an archaic term, but you’ll hear it from time to time – plus, it uses kanji you’ve learned before, so that’s good practice.
  • Reading: The on’yomi readings.
