Meaning: East

There are some holy cross rice paddys with religiously important fish fins in them for some reason. You want to collect these fins, but you don’t know where to go. You survey around. All you know is that these cross-shaped fin-filled rice paddys are to the east.

So, turn to the east and make your way over there. Did you find all the fins you were looking for? Actually figure out in your imagination which direction east is though. If you struggle a bit at figuring it out (maybe you check moss on trees or check the wind or check the sun…) you’ll likely remember this kanji’s meaning better.

Reading: とう

You walk to what you think is east and test the rice paddy waters out. You reach in and feel around, trying to find those elusive fins you’re looking for. Instead, you pull out a toe (とう).

Feel horrified by your discovery. Ugh. A toe? In a rice paddy? Obviously something is wrong, here. Throw the toe back and keep searching for your fins. Sadly, all you find are toes.
