Meaning: Pond

The poor alligator was taken far inland by a tsunami. His only source of water is a tiny pond that barely fits his body, and doesn’t even provide much food.

Imagine the alligator riding the tsunami in. When he hits the ground, and the water recedes, he’s all alone in a field. He doesn’t like it… it’s not his environment. So, he looks around and finally finds a little pond, but it doesn’t provide much for him. Imagine him looking for food in the little, shallow pond. Imagine him trying to stay wet… it’s just not a great situation to be in, unfortunately.

Reading: ち

When we need to remember the reading ち, we use the word “cheese.” – Eventually, the alligator dies, because it doesn’t have enough nutrients. You find the dead alligator in this pond and you’re curious why it died. Turns out, it actually wasn’t starvation… quite the opposite, in fact. Inside its throat you find a big block of cheese, which suffocated it to death.

Imagine yourself sticking your hand / arm down the alligator’s throat. It’s all goopy and weird feeling inside. Then, you hit something harder, and pull it out. It’s the cheese.
