Seal, Stamp

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
いん しるし +

Meaning: Seal

An egg stamp is your family’s seal.

Come up with some made up history about you and your family that has to do with eggs (which is why your family seal is an egg).

Reading: いん

To remember the reading いん, we use the word “innocent.” – You have to stamp something today with your family’s egg seal. If you stamp it, it will decide if someone you know is innocent or not. Your seal makes that decision (for some reason… what a terrible legal system). So, will you stamp or no?

Remember, someone’s life hangs in the balance. You can choose to stamp it or not. If you do, they’re innocent, if you don’t.. well… you’ll be hanging them (but perhaps they did something really bad? Up to you!).

Vocabulary

Only one word to learn right now – but as you learn more complicated kanji, this on’yomi will be a lot more important than the kun’yomi.

a 印(しるし)= Stamp, Logo

  • Meaning: Same as the kanji
  • Reading: The kun’yomi reading is a mouthful. Think of “sealing” (しる) an envelope with your stamp, then adding another し onto the end.
