Exhaust

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
n/i つく.す, つき.る + + 丿

Meaning: Exhaust

Where the flag is, there’s a slide that provides ice to the people who need it. But, people keep pulling the flag to release more ice, and since they did that too much they exhausted the supply, and will have to wait for more.

Everyone’s really upset about this. Ice is really important to this community, and now they don’t have any. Perhaps you were the last one to get ice, so everyone’s mad at you. Feel their anger and feel a little ashamed… but unwilling to give up your precious ice.

No important on’yomi for this one – just kun’yomi.

Vocabulary

Two words to learn – learn their meanings first and then if you can take away something for the reading as well.

a 尽す(つくす)= Do Everything In One’s Power

  • Meaning: When you exhaust yourself, you’re doing everything in your power to get it done, so to speak.
  • Reading: The first kun’yomi reading. I’d recommend letting the study decks do their job.

a 尽きる(つきる)= Be Exhausted

  • Meaning: This one is the same as the kanji, verb form. You aren’t doing the exhausting, something is just exhausted.
  • Reading: The other kun’yomi reading. Once again, use the study deck to learn this one.
