Red (赤)
This is the same as the radical 赤. It is RED.
Reading:n/i
Another kanji with unimportant on’yomi. Still, this is a nice and common kanji, so pay extra attention to the vocab below.
Vocabulary
Only two words, but they’re such good ones!
a 赤(あか)= Red
- Meaning: Same as the kanji
- Reading: The kun’yomi reading. Think of Fozzie Bear. He says “Wakka wakka wakka” a lot. Now, think of an evil, red Fozzie Bear. He drops the “w” and just says “Aka Aka Aka.”
a 赤ちゃん(あかちゃん)= Baby
- Combo: 赤 (red) + ちゃん (name ender for kids)
- Meaning: “red kid” is kind of what this means, though it’s hard to translate ちゃん. Babies, when they come out, are all red though. So, that’s why 赤ちゃん is “baby.”
- Reading: If you know 赤 you should know this.
