Meaning: Food Bowl
The well has a little drop in it, and that drop is an egg. The Japanese food bowl is kind of like this. Rice is at the bottom, and you put an egg in the middle. It looks like this kanji as well, in fact. You’ll have to rewrap your mind around these radicals to make them mean food bowl, though, so make sure you make the connection.
Make sure you smell the food too – smelling the food uses an extra sense, and extra senses will help you to remember things. Like the smell of food will help you to remember food bowl, for sure!
Reading: どん
You’re about to eat your meal when Donatello, the Ninja Turtle, comes up and grabs it out of your hands. He takes it and puts everything down his throat in an instant.
Feel the shock and awe as Donatello (supposedly a good guy!) takes your food (whatever you imagined in the earlier section). Continue the story if you want. What does he do after? What do you do after? Imagine it vividly. Make him say his name a few times.
Vocabulary
Learn the meanings (and readings if you can) of the following words before moving on.
丼(どんぶり)= Bowl of Rice With Food On Top
- Meaning: The same as the kanji (though I shortened the kanji’s meaning so it’s not long like this one).
- Reading: The kun’yomi reading. I’d recommend saving this for the study deck.
〜丼(〜どん)= ~Bowl
- Meaning: This can be any number of things. You’ll get examples in just a second.
- Reading: The reading is the on’yomi reading, because it’s attached to another word, usually.
牛丼(ぎゅうどん)= Beef Bowl
- Combo: 牛 (cow) + 丼 (food bowl)
- Meaning: Something delicious
- Reading: On’yomi readings, put together.
カツ丼(かつどん)= Katsu Bowl
- Combo: カツ (katsu) + 丼 (food bowl)
- Meaning: Something really, really delicious. You should get this.
- Reading: The on’yomi put together.
Notes
You should eat these things. Now I’m hungry :(
