Again

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
ふたた.び +

Meaning: Again

Bot the leaf and the elephant are a bit different from their normal looks, but I think you can still see it. Your elephant has a leaf growing out of his head again. This is like the third time this week, even though you keep pruning it.

Just think… will this happen again and again? You hope not, it doesn’t seem like it’s good for the elephant.

Reading: さ

Each time it appears, it gets thicker and stronger. So now you have to use a saw (さ) to cut the leaf off its head.

Imagine yourself up on top of the elephant, grabbing the giant leaf while trying to saw it off. Smell the leaf, feel the leaf… hear the elephant below you too.

Vocabulary

Lots of good concepts in the vocab below (even if you aren’t going to learn them right away). Like, you can see that 再 indicates [time] after next (as in, year after next) for a lot of different things. So, when you see this kanji with time, you can assume it’s the ___ after next.

a 再び(ふたたび)= Again, Twice

  • Meaning: Same as the kanji
  • Reading: What a dumb sounding word, am I right? Think of the word “foot” and then think of saying the last part twice (again) – footata (ふたた). On second thought, this might be a good “rely on the study deck to help you learn it” sort of word.

a 再三(さいさん)= Again and Again, Repeatedly

  • Combo: 再 (again) + 三 (three)
  • Meaning: Again three times is repeatedly, I’d say. Kinda like how 3′s a crowd, as they say.
  • Reading: The on’yomi readings. So much better than that ふたたび trash.
