Meaning: Number
There’s a mouth in the ground (in our case, it’s a hatch), and inside is some kind of enclosure you can’t quite get to. If you’ve ever seen Lost, this will sound familiar… on the hatch, there’s actually a series of numbers that you don’t understand.
What are these numbers? What do they mean? Think over it for a while, get frustrated, and try to figure it out. You can’t, though, so you probably won’t ever get inside.
Reading: ごう
Then, it opens. That’s a surprise. But, you look in the hole and it’s dark, and you hear noises inside. The biggest question in your mind now should be “Do I go (ごう) in? Or, do I go away from here?” My vote is to go away.
You should feel some fear or excitement with this to help you to remember this feeling of going (whether it’s in, or away).
Vocabulary
Only one word to learn with this kanji for now though many coming later – and lucky you, this kanji is one of those kanji that pretty much only have a (useful) on’yomi.
a 号(ごう)= Number, Edition, Make, Model
- Meaning: Same as the kanji. You’ll see this on the end of all kinds of numbers!
- Reading: On’yomi! Because it’s usually connected to something else (and rarely, if ever, alone).
