Next

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
つ.ぎ +

Meaning: Next

You have some ice on the ground. You’re testing people for their ability to walk across it. The first person walks across… failed! The second… failed! You keep going and going. Soon you just start saying Next, next, next, next… until all are gone and you have nobody left to test.

Feel a little frustrated you can’t find your ice walker. The “next next next” voice you have should sound irritated and rushed. You want to find your ice walking hero quickly!

Reading: じ

To remember the reading じ, we used the word “Jesus” – Then, your hero arrives. It’s Jesus comes up and just walks across, no problem. Why? Because he can walk on water, so why not ice? There will be no more next applicant. You know who will be your ice walker, and that person is Jesus.

Feel the excitement when you finally find the person you’re looking for. You’re so happy! Then, as you offer him the job, he comes up to you and says “I am sorry, my people need me elsewhere, I am Jesus after all” and then vanishes in a puff of smoke. You’re so disappointed now that Jesus wouldn’t take your job.
