Vocabulary
a 甘い(あまい)= Sweet
- Meaning: Same as the kanji – it’s an adjective, you can tell by the い sticking out. This is for when something is sweet tasting. If you eat a cake, and it’s super sugary, you could say 甘い!!
- Reading: The kun’yomi reading of the kanji – you have to remember the あま part. Who’s the sweetest person of them all? “A Ma” (あま) … aka a mother.
a 甘える(あまえる)= To behave like a spoilt child
- Meaning: A lot of fighter-types on Japanese TV shows will say things like “甘えるな!” which basically is telling them to not be so naive, because spoilt children are naive and dumb in the real world.
- Reading: The reading can be known if you know 甘い’s reading on its own. So, know that and you’ll know this reading too.
