Life

on’yomi kun’yomi Radicals
せい い.きる, う.まれる, う.む, なま

Meaning: Life

The life radical and the life kanji are the same, so hopefully you now just know them both.

Study your radicals and you’ll read good.

Reading: せい

Whenever we need to remember せい, we use the character “Hard Gay” because he always says “SEI SEI SEI!” – If anyone out there is full of life, it’s got to be Hard Gay (せい). He’s so excited about everything, and has a great time with other people. What an awesome life.

If you don’t know Hard Gay, you should definitely search Hard Gay on YouTube… I promise it won’t be as bad as it sounds… and, it’ll help you to learn your kanji better!

Vocabulary

生きる(いきる)= To Live

  • Meaning: The meaning is the same as the kanji, but verb form.
  • Reading: The reading is one of the many kun’yomi readings. Because there are several, I’d recommend doing your best now, but then relying on your study cards to do the rest.

生まれる(うまれる)= To Be Born

  • Meaning: This is when something is born. You aren’t the one giving birth, but something is becoming born into this world.
  • Reading: This is one of many kun’yomi readings. Just use your study cards, it’s probably not worth it to try and learn all of these right now.

生む(うむ)= To Give Birth

  • Meaning: To give birth. This is when you’re the one doing life to someone else, so to speak. You’re doing the action of “borning,” if that makes any sense at all.
  • Reading: The reading is one of many kun’yomi readings. Do your best to learn it now, but rely on your study decks to do the rest.

生(なま)= Raw

  • Meaning: Think of life as something that’s raw. If something’s still alive, it’s raw, right? That’s what 生 is.
  • Reading: One of many readings for the kun’yomi. I’d say you should rely on your study cards.

a 人生(じんせい)= one’s life

  • Combo: 人 (person) + 生 (life)
  • Reading: The reading is the on’yomi readings of the individual kanji.
