Reading: りつ
Think of someone who has to stand up straight for you. These people are pros in hospitality. These are the doormen at the Ritz (りつ).
Imagine the doormen being extra straight… too straight in their standing. On their uniform is “The Ritz” written in fine lettering, and as you walk past them, they stand up straight and say “Welcome to the Ritz!” Whatever you do, while you’re thinking about it, make sure you think about how they stand up so straight, and associate it with these doormen, who work, specifically, at the Ritz. If you effectively imagine all this, you should be able to remember this on’yomi. Go through it like it’s a movie in your head!

a 立つ（たつ）＝ To Stand
- Meaning: This vocab has the same meaning as the kanji, but it’s the verb form. This is when someone or something stands. You’re not standing something up yourself. That’s the next vocab.
- Reading: The reading is the kun’yomi reading. Think about a whole bunch of tater tots (たつ) standing up in front of you, on little tater tot legs.
a 立てる（たてる）＝ To Stand (Something)
- Meaning: This is when you’re actually standing something up, like standing up a doll or something (eww, dolls, creepy!).
- Reading: If you can remember the reading of the previous vocab, you can take the た from that and apply it to this one.
a 目立つ（めだつ）＝ Stand Out
- Combo: 目 (eye) + 立つ (to stand)
- Meaning: When something stands in your eye it’s something that stands out.
- Reading: Know the kun’yomi readings of these (remember how 目 likes its kun’yomi reading?) and you’ll know the reading of this vocab word too.
