Using Your Passion List (Desu)

“It’s not the will to win that matters–everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” – Paul “Bear” Bryant

Remember that list of vocab you created for your “passion list” in the previous chapter? Go ahead and whip it out, we’re going to use it to practice and then solidify the grammar point “desu.” Here’s what we’ll do.

Using your “passion vocab,” write “it is a ______” in Japanese for each one of them, in hiragana. So, if one of the things was baseball (やきゅう) you’d write やきゅうです. You’re writing it in hiragana so you can practice it, and get some good repetition writing desu (or should I say です?), since it’s so common and useful.

As you go through this, you’ll only want to use the nouns in your list. Verbs are definitely off the table, and adjectives (because they’re pretty weird in Japanese) are probably off the table too.

When you’ve done this, move on to the practice where we’ll work on です (as well as some other things).
