Practice

Your First Particle HaHaHa (ははは)

Good job finishing this chapter – the first thing you’re going to look at is sentences, because sentences are an awesome way to become fluent with something you’ve just learned in Japanese. Anki makes it even better. But first, I just want you to go through these sentences and make sure you’re able to read them all. Out loud. As fast as the audio file. Can you do that for me? I bet you can – might just take a little time and practice (but trust me, the time you put in now will gain you a lot more time in the future).

Sentences 6

Wow, you’re already on your 6th set of sentences! That’s cool. Let’s get started ASAP. Remember, meaning doesn’t matter right now (though I bet you can figure out the meaning of a bunch of these on your own). Right now, just focus on reading these out loud, and mimicking the audio.

a あめ は ゆき じゃありません。

a ぶどう は くだもの です

a さとう は さとう です

a さとう は じてんしゃ じゃありません

a ねこ は いぬ じゃありません

a しお は しお です

a せんせい は ともだち でした

a こういちさん は せんせい です。

a ひとみさん は こども です。

a ぼぼさん は いぬ じゃありません。

a 十は七じゃありません

a くるま は ちかてつ じゃありません

a 刀ですか?

When you’re done, and you can do them all, download Sentences 6 for Anki. You’ll import this into your Sentences Deck.

Sentences 6

Go ahead and get started and review. If you’ve continued to stay caught up with sentences, you should get some of the new (Sentences 6) ones too. If you’re not caught up, it might be a lot of review :( Either way, make sure you stay caught up, it makes things easier in the long run!

Before You Move On

For now, this is actually all I want you to do. We’ll be diving deeper into は and things like that all through the next chapter or two (and many chapters to come, but especially those two) which means those chapters themselves will provide the practice you need (along with the decks on Anki you’re working with, you gotta stay consistent with those).

  • Make sure you understand は
  • Make sure you know how は is pronounced when it is a particle and when it isn’t a particle
  • Understand the whole AはB concept
  • Make sure you’ve downloaded and imported all the decks from this chapter (see menu for this chapter to see what downloads there are).
  • Make sure you can say (out loud) all the above sentences.
  • Make sure you’ve studied and reviewed your Anki decks until they’re like “hey, whoa, you studied all you need to study, [wlm_firstname].”

That should do it – when you’re all ready, go ahead and move on to the next chapter. It’s new stuff but it’s also the stuff you learned just now, which means you should do just fine!
