It’s Just AはB!

“The great aim of education is not knowledge but action.” - Herbert Spencer

The cool thing about this is you already know how to do this, even if you don’t know you know how to do this quite yet. The pattern is the same pattern we’ve been working with for the last couple of chapters: AはBです. For example…

こういちさん は さっか です
Koichi-san is an author

A: こういち B: さっか where AはB.

If you can do that, you can also work with これ, それ, and あれ.

これ は ____ です = This is a ________.

それ は ____ です = That is a ________.

あれ は ____ です = That over there is a _________.

As you can see, it’s just the AはB pattern, where これ, それ, and あれ are the A’s in these sentences. Of course, the AはB pattern doesn’t always have to be positive, it can be any of the other noun tenses you learned throughout this season.

How would you say “This is not _____.”?

これ は ____ じゃありません = This is not _________.

How would you say “That was _______.”?

それ は ____ でした = That was ________.

How would you say “That over there was not _______.”?

あれ は ____ じゃありませんでした = That over there was not _____.

At this point, it’s time to look at some vocabulary words. You’ll learn these words and then we’ll use them to practice これ, それ, and あれ. It will also wrap up the “Common 50 Japanese Nouns” list, too. So congrats on being almost done with this set!

By finishing this page, you should understand the patterns presented above and have a general understanding on how これ, それ, and あれ can be used within things you already know.
