“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” – Jim Rohn

The goal of this practice session is to make sure you know the difference between the two types of つもり’s. Also, we’ll make sure you can do and use the first kind of つもり (planning) well enough on your own to use it and start integrating it into other grammar.

Let’s start simple first. Translate the following sentences to English:

a牛丼 を たべる つもり だ

I plan to eat gyudon

aわたし は とても おもしろい つもり だ

I am convinced I’m very interesting

aすし を たくさん たべた つもり だ

I am convinced I ate a lot of sushi

aみず を たくさん のむ つもり です

I plan to drink a lot of water

aあの でんしゃ は はやい つもり だ

I’m convinced that train over there is fast

aえいが を みる つもり です

I plan to watch a movie

aあの えいが を みた つもり です

I’m convinced I watched that movie

So far so good? That should get you primed to practice some more, and write some of your own Japanese up on Lang-8. Here’s the topic for this lesson:

Write about what you’re planning to do tomorrow. You can start with:

明日、_____________つもりです。

Other things you could talk about:

  1. Do you like this thing you’re going to do?
  2. “If you go” what will you do? _____に いったら ______________.
  3. What will you do when you’re there (if it’s a place)
  4. What will you do related to this thing you’re doing?

Really, there’s probably only going to be one つもり in this journal post, so make it good!

When you’ve written your post, move on to the next page. Time for 6-stroke kanji!

By finishing this page, you’ve practiced つもり and even written using つもり. Be sure to check your corrections on Lang-8 to improve!
