Practicing Japanese Gendered Language

“All the English speakers, or almost all, have difficulties with the gender of words.” - Bernard Pivot

Because there’s a lot of things you don’t really have to remember but kind of do, I thought I’d make things easier on you study-wise and create an Anki deck for you to import into your “TextFugu Vocab” deck. Do that, study a bit, and then move on.

Sentence Enders on Anki

You’ll start seeing these sentence enders on TextFugu from now on, and I’ll be sure to ease you into them (though mostly you’re going to see ね and よ, so hopefully you know those). But, it’s still good to study them a bit so you’re familiar before you see them in the wild.

Now, this isn’t all the Japanese gendered language that exists out there, but it is a good chunk of it. Really, it’s not terribly complicated, and there are only a few key things you need to learn. We’ll be going over some other examples of gendered language in the nearish future, but not until you need it. For now, you’ve taken a big step (knowing that gendered language in Japanese exists is most people’s problem) and will get better at this in time.

By finishing this page, you’ll have the tools you need to study these sentence enders so that you’re able to understand them when you see them in the future.
