What Are Adverbs?

“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” - Stephen King

Adverbs are pretty much what they sound like.

Ad = Adjective

Verbs = Verbs

Combine them together, and you have “Adjective Verbs.” Basically, it’s when you use an adjective to describe how you’re doing something. For example:

Eat quickly

Walk carefully

Drink quietly

In general, any adjective that ends with ly in English is considered an Adverb. You’re doing something ____ly. In English, this is fairly easy to do. In Japanese, it’s also pretty easy, but there are a couple of rules you’ll have to learn, since you have two types of adjectives to work with (な and い). The verbs, luckily, don’t really change, meaning all you have to learn is the adjective rules.

By finishing this page, you’ve learned what an adverb is as well as what you’ll need to learn to be able to use adverbs in Japanese
