Becoming A Noun

“We must become the change we want to see in the world.” – Gandhi

Using なる itself with nouns is really quite simple. The pattern is as follows – nothing here should be new:

_____になる

Become _______.

At least, that’s how it is in its simplest state. So I ask you… what will you become?

aいしゃ に なる
(I) will become a doctor

aかいしゃいん に なった
(I) became a company employee

aお母さん に なりたい
(I) want to become a mother

aもうすぐ 冬休み に なる
Pretty soon it will become winter holiday

a先生 に なる つもりです
I plan to become a teacher

So, let me ask you some questions – use the examples above to answer these:

What will you become?

What have you become (already)?

What do you plan on becoming?

What do you want to become?

When you’ve answered these questions and feel comfortable with them, move on. If you’re unsure, feel free to put your answers in Lang-8 or the TextFugu Forums (and myself and others will help you out there).

By finishing this page, you know the basics of using なる with nouns.
