Ultimate Vocab

Before you get started with casual nouns, I want to introduce something new and amazing. Hopefully it will kind of blow your mind, too. Up until now, we’ve been learning different little groups of vocab. You know some verbs, you know some nouns, and you know some adjectives. You also know some other kinds of words too. Although all of these words have been common and useful, it’s finally time to get really serious about vocab.
I present to you the “Ultimate Vocab” Anki imports.
Now, these aren’t any old lists of vocab. These are ultimate. They also follow the 80-20 rule fantastically. You’ll be learning nouns, adjectives, and verbs that make up the 20% of words that give you 80% of the benefit. Although you’ll be learning these a little bit at a time (you’ll just import a set every chapter or so, I’ll let you know when, don’t worry), eventually you’ll learn:
- Approximately 200 verbs
- Approximately 200 adjectives
- Approximately 1000 nouns
This might seem like a lot, but think of these numbers in the grand scheme of things. To become really fluent in Japanese, I’d say you probably want to know 10,000 words. That’s like really really fluent. But, you’re going to be learning 1400 words. That’s 14% of the way there. That’s not a lot, but remember we’re following the 80-20 rule here. By learning these 1400 words (i.e. the 14%), you’re learning the words used 80% of the time. Quality over quantity. Usually learners have no idea which words these are – that’s where TextFugu comes in. I put in the work picking all these words for you so you don’t have to. You can just sit back, relax study hard, and start feeling 80% fluent with only 14% of the work.
Then, when you’re done with these, you can start the other 86% (and you’ll get fluent way, way faster). How awesome is that?
Don’t be discouraged by these numbers, though. It’ll go fast. You’ll be getting the words in groups of around 20-30, and you’ll be done before you know it! So, let’s take a look at our first set.
