じゃない & じゃなかった

We’re going to skip right ahead to the last two right now, just because otherwise I think we’d be moving too slowly. By now, you should know the drill.
じゃありません → じゃない
じゃありませんでした → じゃなかった
As always, all you need to do is replace the two formal/neutral noun sentence enders with the two casual noun sentence enders. If you do that, your sentence will become “casual.”
audio二人 の 子 じゃありません。
It is not two kids.
audio二人 の 子 じゃない。
It is not two kids (casual).
audio千円 じゃありませんでした。
It was not 1000 yen.
audio千円 じゃなかった。
It was not 1000 yen (casual).
Now it’s your turn to try – make these sentences casual.
牛じゃありません。犬です。
audio牛じゃない。犬だ。(It’s not a cow. It’s a dog)
今月は五月です。
audio今月は五月だ。(This month is May)
あめ は ゆき じゃありません。
audioあめ は ゆき じゃない。(Rain is not snow)
かれ の しゃしん じゃありませんでした。
audioかれ の しゃしん じゃなかった。(It wasn’t his picture)
Now we have to look at one more thing that you probably have “questions” about (har dee har har) and then we’ll move right on to adjectives, where we’ll practice this along with the (very simple) adjective stuff.
