Negative Dictionary Group 2 Verbs
“Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you’re alive, it isn’t.” – Richard Bach
Group 2 is even easier than Group 1 (isn’t it always?). The pattern is very simple, and involves only things you’ve already learned up to this point. Here’s how it goes:
Group2 v.dict stem + ない
Let’s take a look at a few Group 2 verbs.
たべます = To Eat
あつめます = To assemble
きこえます = To be audible
やけます = To be burnt
Now, if we use the above rules, how would you turn the above verbs into negative form?
たべます → たべ → たべない
don’t eat
あつめます → あつめ → あつめない
don’t assemble
きこえます → きこえ → きこえない
not audible
やけます → やけ → やけない
will not burn
And so on. You just take the stem of the Group 2 verb and add ない to it (which you learned on the last page means “to not have” or “to not exist”).
Now, the only real thing besides the rules for Group 1 and Group 2 verbs you need to be able to do / remember is just being able to tell Group 1 & 2 verbs apart from each other in the first place. If you can do that, then you’re going to be in pretty good shape. We’ve been practicing that for quite a few lessons now (and will continue to do so, it’s difficult!) so hopefully it’s starting to come together at least a little bit at this point. It’s a long process, but one you’ll reach slowly but surely as long as you keep working at it.
Taking the above rules, I have one more “fill-in-the-blank” puzzle for you. See if you can solve it.
