Now it’s time to take what you’ve just learned and apply it to things you need to review. Let’s start super simple at first, making regular, verby sentences using ない and なかった forms. We’ll jump right into it. Convert the following sentences over to casual form.
aすし を たべます。
aすし を たべる。
I will eat sushi.
aすし は のみません。
aすし は のまない。
You don’t drink sushi.
aてき を みませんでした。
aてき を みなかった。
I didn’t see the enemy.
aせんせい を アタックしました。
aせんせい を アタックした。
I attacked the teacher.
aにほんご を ならいません。
aにほんご を ならわない。
I will not learn Japanese.
aじてんしゃ を こわしませんでした。
aじてんしゃ を こわさなかった。
I didn’t break the bicycle.
aわたし は ぜんぜん なきませんよ。
aわたし は ぜんぜん なかないよ。
I don’t cry at all.
aそれ は ちがいますよ。
aそれ は ちがうよ。
That’s wrong.
aふじさん に のぼりませんでした。
aふじさん に のぼらなかった。
I didn’t climb Mt. Fuji.
aハリーポッター を よみません。
aハリーポッター を よまない。
I will not read Harry Potter.
That shouldn’t have been too bad. Pretty basic, and uses the four casual version of the verbs. Now let’s do this with some previous grammar you’ve learned. Combine, combine, combine. Make sure you could go through all the above questions / examples, and you understood them, then move on to the next set (which are a bit harder!).
aすし を たべる ために マクドナルド に いきませんでした。
aすし を たべる ために マクドナルド に いかなかった。
In order to eat sushi I didn’t go to McDonalds.
aジュース を のんだら、げんき に なりますよ。
aジュース を のんだら、げんき に なるよ！
If you drink juice, you’ll become genki/energetic.
aにほんご を ならう ために ちゅうごくご を べんきょうしませんでした。
aにほんご を ならう ために ちゅうごくご を べんきょうしなかった。
In order to learn Japanese, I didn’t study Chinese.
Now, there are some grammar points which always require casual form. For example, はず verbs (at least the ones before the はず) are always casual. Now you know how to do negative verbs casually, meaning you can expand on this grammar point knowledge a little bit too.
aボビーさん は パーティー に いく はず です。
I expect Bobby will go to the party.
aボビーさん は パーティー に いかない はず です
I don’t expect Bobby will go to the party.
See how we can take what you just learned and apply it to something you also just learned? Basically, you knew this already, but you didn’t know you knew it. Trippy.
Anyways, that does it for review for this chapter. All that’s left is the last of the 5-stroke kanji and then a little blurb on what you should be studying / what you need to know before moving on. Now that you know how to do the casual verb conjugations you’re pretty golden… that is, as soon as you’re good at them. We’ll want to make sure of that!
