Group 2 Verbs (た-Form)
“The only way to start is to start.” - Anonymous
As I promised, Group 2 Verbs are easy as pie (as long as you know which verbs are the Group 2 verbs). Generally, though, it’s pretty simple. If a verb in dictionary form ends with る it’s probably a Group 2 Verb. While this isn’t the case every single time (there’s some exceptions, sadly) it’s a pretty reliable rule to follow. So, what do we do with Group 2 Verbs to make them た-Form verbs (i.e. past tense dictionary verbs)?
る → た
たべる→たべた
みる→みた
ねる→ねた
わすれる→わすれた
でる→でた
As you can see, incredibly easy to do. Your job now, however, is to remember what る goes to (when it comes to Group 2 verbs). There’s a Group 1 Verb rule that uses る as well (where る became った). You can remember what Group 2 Verbs go to (た) just by remembering the Group 1 る rule. It’s just った without the little っ (so it just becomes た). Simple as that.
There’s no worksheet for this one because 1) it’s too simple, and 2) we’ll be combining the Group 2 + Irregular Verbs practice sheet into one, so you can practice all three at once.
Next up is Irregulars (& Exceptions). There’s only a couple of these, and they aren’t all that hard. You’re 95% of the way there! :D
