する Verbs
“Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.” - Mark Twain
する Verbs are kind of an extension of the “Irregular Verbs” because really they just use the します→する conversion you learned on the last page. But, I thought it would be good to quickly talk about these する Verbs (or “します Verbs,” if you prefer) since there are a lot of them and you’ll see them a lot.
You know some する verbs already, in fact…
audioけっこんする (to marry)
audioりょこうする (to travel)
audioべんきょうする (to study)
These types of verbs are interesting, because really it’s just “NOUN+する.” You’re essentially saying you’re doing a noun.
aけっこん = Marriage (Do Marriage)
aりょこう = Travels (Do Travels)
aべんきょう = Studies (Do Studies)
There are a lot of common する verbs in the Verbs List you’re studying, and it’ll be great to learn them, but する Verbs are pretty flexible. There are so many nouns you can stick する on and it’ll suddenly become a verb. People make things up sometimes too, and it just works. I’m not saying it always works (you can’t just stick する onto any noun you want) but it’s not totally uncommon either. In dictionaries, you’ll often see nouns that are categorized as nouns and する verbs. If you see this, you know you can add する to it to make it a verb.
All I wanted to do on this page is tell you a little more about する Verbs … just because knowing about them and how they work is important. You’ll learn the vocabulary that uses them over time – I can’t expect you to do all that immediately right now – but the first step is knowing about them.
