I Expect You To Be Fine
“Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

[wlm_username]さんは大丈夫なはずだ!This kind of thing is no problem for the likes of you…but we should practice just a little bit more anyways, I think. Let’s work on making some of your own sentences, kind of like what we did on the second half of the last page. This time we’re looking at some mini conversations, though. I’m going to ask you a question, you tell me what you expect about the answer. Let’s start off simple:
aコウイチさん も いく?
Will Koichi also (も) go?
aはい、コウイチさん も いく はず だ。
Yes, I expect Koichi will also go.
aアイフェルタワー は たかい?
Is the Eiffel Tower tall?
aはい、アイフェルタワー は たかい はず だ。
Yes, I expect the Eiffel Tower is tall.
aボビーさん は がくせい ですか?
Is Bobby a student?
aはい、ボビーさん は がくせい の はず だ。
Yes, I expect Bobby is a student.
aパティーで なに が ありますか?
At the party (パティーで) what will they have?
aすし が ある はずだ
I expect (they) will have sushi
aなんじ に ねますか?
What time (なんじ) will he sleep?
a8じ に ねる はずだ。
I expect (He will) sleep at 8 o’clock
Although this grammar is pretty easy, hopefully it gave you some practice with casual verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc (especially verbs!). As you get farther along in Japanese, the things you learn will become more and more specific (just like this), and the most important thing is to keep practicing them (until you get good enough at them to not have to practice them anymore!). TextFugu will definitely work these “specific” grammar points into future lessons, but make sure you’ve taken some notes and take a look at them from time to time (and integrate them into your own practice on Lang-8 and otherwise!).
There’s also a worksheet you can go through. Included in the worksheet is some info on something you’ll be learning (about はず) later this season!
One last thing before you move on … kanji!
